****FINALS WEEK****
Okay folks, if you’ve uploaded anything for your final exams- run it by us before you turn it in! Now is the time to make that B- an A-… or a B+ … whatever, I’m not making any promises! But we DO want to see what you’ve been doing this semester so please bring your thumb drive or you laptop or better yet, upload it to YouTube. If your instructors haven’t yet made it a requirement, they should consider it. So, let’s review what you’ve learned this year in your ASL/Interpreting classes and how it’s made you a better signer/interpreter.
Also we’re going to be discussing Professionalism and your reputation. You may not know it but you’ve already got a rep… for better or for worse. Your peers are judging you, your instructors are judging you, your community will judge you as soon as you say who your instructor was …. even 20 years from now. Most of you know one way and that’s the way your teacher taught you and your teacher is the expert yeah yeah, I get it… but we need to have a talk about that… That, and the other 1,001 self inflicted wounds to the foot that you will fire off.
But hey, this is all in good fun! Let’s eat, drink and be merry! We won’t see most of you until late September so let’s kick off summer Friday night. The crazy person that occupies my brain is telling me to hold a summer Fight Club- garage style. But that’s no promise!
As always, the more the merrier. Please have uploaded material to share with Fight Club this Friday… The more we can watch each other the less you have to hear me. We will be raffling off some random stuff so if you want to raffle something off, please feel free to bring it. Also, please feel free to bring snacks, wine or a six pack for those who like to keep it real :O

FRONT ROOM: The 12 steps to recovery.
During your career as an interpreter, sooner or later you will be asked to interpret RECOVERY in some fashion or another. It could be an inpatient rehab center. It could be the rooms of Alcoholics/Narcotics Anonymous. It could be for any number of eating or self injury disorders where treatment is rooted in a 12 step approach. But what do you know about recovery? How do you conceptually sign RECOVERY? Does it mean “Health/Confident”?? What about RELAPSE? What do you do with the 12th Tradition?? (Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities.)
The 12 steps and traditions are typically read by a volunteer in the meeting and most members of the support group know these like the back of their hand- so they are going to be spoken rather fast. Will you be able to keep up with the speaker and maintain the spirit of the 12 steps and 12 traditions? We’ll also talk about street names for drugs and concepts related to drugs/alcohol/recovery.

If you have video of yourself interpreting or signing on YouTube or on a thumb drive, let’s have a look! We encourage ALL of you to open an account on YouTube and use it as a signing journal that you don’t mind sharing with us *wink*
If you don’t have the means to upload yourself online but would still like one on one time, we can video you doing a short segment of the 12 steps/traditions and use that for content. PLEASE TAKE ADVANTAGE! Few certified interpreters are willing to meet with students free of charge to provide one on one mentoring. This is a real perk so please try to come prepared.

WELCOME BACK! We’re wasting no time this year and are ready to dig in! This Fight Club will be jam packed with information so bring your notebook. Throughout all the various activities that we will do, the main point is to sign what you mean… NOT sign what you hear. CONCEPT CONCEPT CONCEPT. In our profession, a very simple sentence may require a lot of thought and interpretation to accurately convey the speakers thought.
This months Fight Club we will be focusing on the following:
Choosing the right sign for any given concept
Voicing
Ethics
Vocabulary
Sign Production
Breakout groups to discuss real life interpreting scenarios
This Fight Club promises to be rich in content so take advantage and be here. Bring your pretty self and any snack or booze that you would like to share.
We would like to begin a raffle this year so if there’s any SWAG that you have or your band has a CD or you have art work or even home grown tomatoes or maybe you have a chicken that lays eggs–BRING IT FOR OUR GIVE AWAY!!

Having hosted a full season of Fight Club, I am amazed to see how many talented ASL/interpreting stundents are in our area. There’s WVNCC, CCAC, IUP, The University of Pittsburgh, the staff at PRSD and on and on and on. Fight Club has been a place where students regardless of their school or level of education can come to network and learn from each other as well as from Deaf and working interpreters.
Steel City Interpreters also offers mentoring opportunities at no cost and opportunities to shadow certified interpreters at work.
While we love seeing your shining faces, here’s some tips on how to improve your skills:
1. Watch our YouTube channel… If there’s a good vlog out there, we’re sure to like it- so go see why!
2. Get on Skype! Exchange your info with your classmates and with your peers at Fight Club and chat away VOICE OFF!
3. Go to PAD! The Deaf Club is a great place to meet Deaf people in our community and make friends. Check em out at www.pghdeafclub.org

So what is Visual Gerstural Communication and when do we interpreters use it? OFTEN! Sometimes the most effective way to communicate a thought is to act it out. Many of our consumers are nonverbal, on the Autism spectrum, have Minimal Language Skills so you best be able to convey your thoughts!
